My Off Season, Mountain Biking, and Other Updates....
I guess everybody's off season is in full swing at this point. Those who could...have gone to warmer places to ride. For the rest of us, we are stuck in the cold NYC and trying to stay motivated with indoor trainers and other cross fit activities. For me, I am trying to get more riding done by mountain biking in Long Island. When I am not riding, I work on my mountain bike and just recently built up a new wheelset, the first time. My first ever wheelset. So far so good.
My first wheelset I have ever built....with Shimano SLX hubs and DT Swiss M462 rims. Total weight is about 1960g.
Interestingly, I have ridden 5 times in the Long Island trails so far and all of them were over 3 hours to 4 hours long. None of the ride felt that long. When you are riding in the woods, the cold does not get to you as much. Long Island trails are typically single track with lots of ups and downs. No major long climbs. Some trail sections can get technical but they don't normally require you to ride with a full suspension bike. I just find that doing a 4 hour ride with my mountain bike in Long Island trails is far more interesting and fun than spending the same amount of time riding on my road bike. If I didn't freeze to death riding that long in this time of the year, I would have been bored to death. It was never easy for me to spend over 4 hours to 5 hours riding on the road even when the weather was warmer, let alone doing it in Winter. Looking forward to my next trail adventure with my new wheelset. CLIMB is a great resource page for those who are interested in mountain biking in Long Island. I try to restrict my driving distance under 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The White Ghost section in the Glacier Ridge Trail. This section has everything...love it.
Testing my new wheelset in Prospect Park. The weather was cold enough to freeze up the surface of the lake and there was some light snow in the morning too.
I am sure many of you are wondering about the 2019 season and if there will be more or less racing and race series. According to an anonymous source, it is possible that there will be major changes happening with all the FBF series in 2019. I don't have the details however.
